Verse 17.5

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः।दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः।।17.5।।

aśhāstra-vihitaṁ ghoraṁ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ dambhāhankāra-sanyuktāḥ kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ

Meaning

People who do crazy, unauthorized austerities, all about the fake-deep vibes and ego, driven by lust and attachment are, like, totally sus.

Commentary

Okay, so some peeps think that, like, *totally* torturing their bodies is the key to, like, achieving their life goals. It's all about clout and getting that cash to, like, totally live it up. They'll stand on one leg, arms up, the whole shebang. But that's not *real* tapas, fam. That's, like, the *dark side* of tapas. Torturing yourself doesn't unlock enlightenment. These people? They don't even know the basics of the scriptures. They straight-up mock the OG religious peeps and diss the wise elders. They're all puffed up, thinking they're the bee's knees, flexing their wealth. They do these austerities that aren't even legit. They're doing extreme stuff that goes against the rules, all for their own desires and attachments. They'll even, like, *kill kids* to appease their deity. Instead of killing their ego, they kill innocent animals for their own selfish reasons. It's totally messed up. They trash talk the scriptures and wander around lost in their own delusions. They're all about following their passions, hurting themselves and others. Their austerities hurt them and everyone around them. It's a total L. They're totally doomed.
